Are You Close Enough?
Design Ethics Project

1. Qualitative Research
2. Archive Files
3. Graduate Students in NYC
Explore the causes and effects of the high cost of living, mainly focusing on art school students, using surveys and interviews.

Furthermore, to have a deeper understanding of what categories burden students the most by setting up some interactive stand, if possible, to collect people’s thoughts about living in the most expensive city.

Then, to clarify what they want to change in NYC and Pratt Institute.

Public Probes

By installing the designed posters in public spaces, the interactive features are expected to catch students’ attention and encourage them to participate in our research.

There are 3 different aspects of the public probes.
1. Proximity and Sense of Belonging - whether the distance and rent affect students’ participation in school events and further influence their sense of belonging.
2. Personality and Sense of Belonging - whether different personalities affect students’ willingness to socialize with others.
3. High Cost of Living and Sense of Belonging - whether the high cost of living regarding tuition, transportation, and so on affects their decision to participate in school/ social events.

Take Home Probes

A 4-day time stamp card is designed to capture the students’ privacy.

Throughout the interview process, it is assumed that personal priority could influence students’ decisions to join social events.
